Hello Everyone,
When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one person to dissolve his promise to abstain from political discourse, that time is now. I have tried to stick to conflict-free subjects like weddings or music but I cannot remain silent. Nor do I want to run the risk of Fiddling while Rome Burns. So, I’d rather make hay while the sun shines. Boy, I seem to be full of adages today.
I promise to limit my forays into politics as I’m sure you’re getting your fill each day through your regular news sources.

You may recall in my February 27th blog “We Do Solemnly Swear”, that despite evidence to the contrary I believed our government and its institutions to be resilient. I also said that we would be tested in the coming months and indeed we have been… continuously. I remain optimistic.
Little by little, citizens across the land are voicing their opinions, contacting their representatives, and otherwise acting in support of our shared values and protecting our democracy. Indeed, the sleeping giant is awakening.
Democracy is the most just and equitable form of government. Built on the principles of freedom, equal representation, the rule of law, with ultimate power residing with the people. But for all its ideals democracy is fragile, easier to admire in theory but difficult to preserve in practice. We have heard it a million times: “democracy requires our constant vigilance.” Indeed, the millions of Americans who came before us were called upon numerous times to keep its fires burning. It is now our turn. Time to confront the forces that seek to diminish, even destroy all that defines us and our great nation. The oldest democracy on earth.
There are no magic bullets. No one is going to ride in on a white horse and save us. No. There is only us. You and me. We the people. It is up to us to protect and defend our democracy against all enemies foreign and domestic. The exists a serious threat right here at home. We are at a tipping point and I am certain we cannot rely upon our elected representatives in the House and Senate so we must act and do so now.
In this vein I offer up a petition of sorts. A Declaration of Grievances directed toward the Trump Administration and the Congress of the United States. To demonstrate our resolve, we must also commit to taking action. Therefore, I also call for a March on Washington this 4th of July. I call it 5 on the 4th.
5 million Americans taking to the streets to make our grievances known and demand action to resolve them. Ideally, 2 million people would converge on our Nation’s Capital engulfing the entire Federal Government. 3 million others would remain closer to home protesting in their own cities and towns. This will be a good first step and demonstrate our resolve. So, boomers, dust off your protest shoes. We know how this works. The same goes for everyone else.
Note:
I will be contacting a few organizations to take this petition national. I believe one set of grievances carries greater weight than multiple petitions. The same is true for the 5 on the 4th national protest. If you know of anyone that has the expertise to make both a reality, please let me know.

We the people of the United States of America, bound by our commitment to liberty, justice, and the Constitution, express our deep and growing concern over the policies and behavior of the current Trump administration.
We are witnessing with alarm the erosion of democratic norms, the weakening of essential institutions, and the undermining of truth, accountability, and the rule of law. The very principles upon which this nation was founded. Everyone including government officials are subject to and accountable under the law.
The Constitution creates our Democratic form of government based on the idea that the authority to govern is derived from the people. The people are the ultimate source of power.
The Constitution also establishes our 3 branches of government, each having distinct functions, and the ability to limit the powers of the others. A built-in system of checks and balances that prevents tyranny by any one branch or individual. The powers reserved for each branch of government may not be surrendered to any of the others.
While the election of November 5th 2024 returned Donald Trump to the office of President it did so with the understanding that our democratic system of government, and its institutions built over the past 236 years would be respected and continue to serve as the framework for change. Any attempts to improve governmental efficiency, eliminate waste or uncover fraud or corruption would be conducted in a jurisprudent manner, within our existing system of governance and the rule of law.
We the people do not find this to be the case.
The brief but alarming history of the Trump Administration is cause for concern. Actions taken by various individuals within our government resemble an attempt to weaken and destroy the entire Federal Government from within. We regard their behavior to be illegal, unconstitutional, and quite possibly treasonous.
The growing list of grievances against the Trump administration is troubling and undermines our entire system of government, our norms, traditions, and our very security. We express our objections as follows:
OUR CONCERNS ABOUT INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
There is widespread unease with the Trump administration’s handling of foreign policy. We observe a retreat from diplomacy, a disregard for historic alliances, and a posture that endangers global stability and diminishes the standing of the United States on the world stage. International relationships with Europe and others have provided relative peace and stability over the past 80 years following WW II. This administration is undermining these relationships as well as our role within NATO.
Donald Trump and his administration are an existential threat to our Nation, Democracy and perhaps our very existence.
WE ISSUE THE FOLLOWING NOTICE TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES
We the people believe that the US House of Representatives and the Senate of the United States have unconstitutionally abandoned your duties, responsibilities, and your oath of office. Your continued refusal to behave as an independent branch of our government, honoring the Separation of Powers that serve as a check on the Executive Branch is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue. You will be held accountable. There will be consequences.
A WORD TO THE JUDICIAL BRANCH & THE US SUPREME COURT
We look to you to continue serving as the ultimate interpreter of the U.S. Constitution. It is your duty to protect our Civil Liberties while ensuring all Americans adhere to the rule of law.
NOTICE TO THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES
We wish to remind all our armed forces that your loyalty is to the Constitution of the United States, not to any individual president, political party, or government official. You took an oath to defend our nation against all enemies foreign and domestic. You have sworn to obey the lawful orders of the President. You are not required to follow illegal or unconstitutional orders. We hope that if the time ever comes, you will make the legally obligated decision to defend our great nation. The eyes of the nation are upon you. Stand back and stand by.
We the people assert our constitutional right-and solemn responsibility as citizens to resist the further erosion of our democracy. We will organize, we will speak out and we will protest. We will defend the foundations of our Republic.
This is not about party or personality.
This is about principle. This is about preserving the soul of our democracy-for ourselves and for generations to come. We put the Trump administration and the US Congress on notice. The people are watching. The people are rising and we will act.
I left my home in the small Western New York city of Batavia in March 1977 vowing never to shovel snow again. Never say never. Settling for 38 years in what was for me the "promised land" of Santa Barbara, California. I married, helped raise a family, started a business, traveled and live a wonderful life. We spent the last 10 years of our west coast journey in the small, quiet, picturesque town of Ojai. My oldest friends call me TJ.
My wife Deborah and I moved to Colorado in 2015 to be near our daughter, her husband and 2 growing grand-boys. Add 2 bulldogs (French & English) to the mix and our hands and hearts are full. We all reside in Niwot, a small quaint town 15 minutes north of Boulder. The mighty Rocky Mountains are at our doorstep.
I am a man, son, brother, cousin, friend, husband, father, uncle, grand father, in-law and mostly retired Coloradan. You can read more about me on the About Page. If you are curious about my professional life you can visit my Career at Venture Horizon.

Great document. But it is critically important that any demonstrations shall no be violent!! The current administration could use that as an excuse to declare an insurrection and martial Law. That would be the end of our democracy.
Hi Tim,
Thanks for your suggestion. I wholeheartedly agree. One key question is how will people react if it is our government, law enforcement or even the military that initiates violence. Will the people’s response mimick Martin Luther King’s style of non-violence or something well short of turning the other cheek. Time will tell.

This document is excellent, covers all the bases.
And you are so right, Paul, it is our turn to step up, it’s on us. I’m on board, count me in.
Hurray Frannie,
I am reaching out to a bunch of groups that can put these things together on a national level. I will keep you posted.
Paul
Love this. Let me know where I sign.
Hi Nat,
Will do. Once someone with national connections is on board.
Dad
Paul,
Thank you for sharing this blog. Other than joining the local protest gatherings and writing to my Congressman what more can I do as a concerned citizen that will make my voice heard. You indicated you were contacting several agencies to receive more input and support for our efforts. Please let me know if I can be involved in any way.
Thanks Again
Andy
Thanks Andy,
I will let youo know once I get some nationally connected group or groups on board. Like the “Hands-Off” people.
